A 24-hour CPR marathon has raised more than £6,000 for Heartstart Bro Taf.

The money will help the charity buy 25 new training mannequins, replacing vital equipment which was stolen last year.

Heartstart Bro Taf trains members of the public in vital lifesaving techniques, including CPR. Hundreds of volunteers joined in the marathon at the Red Dragon Centre, in Cardiff Bay, at the beginning of June and many more people took the opportunity to learn the skill.

CARDIFF VICTORIOUS IN NATIONAL POOL LIFEGUARD CHAMPIONSHIPS - JUNE 2007

Sunday June 10 2007 saw the third UK Pool Lifeguard Championships take place at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre in Rugby. Hundreds of spectators filled the centre to cheer on their home teams at the event, organised by the Institute of Qualified Lifeguards (IQL). Cardiff won the overall title of best UK Pool Lifeguards, creating a benchmark for UK lifeguards to aspire to.
The 14 competing teams all took part in six events each specifically created to test the skills required to be a pool lifeguard.

The Cardiff Dragons claimed victory after gaining the lead by the third module and holding onto poll position right up to the event’s conclusion. Leeds took second place, with Birmingham City Council claiming third place on the podium.

To enter the Championships, the teams, each comprising of seven lifeguards, had to be fully competent with the criteria laid out in the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). Ralph Riley, Chief Executive of ISRM, comments: “We were encouraged to see such a high standard of entries.

Now in its third year, the championships are really picking up momentum with support from all round the UK. We aim to build on this year on year, providing a platform for the very best pool lifeguards to gain acknowledgment and acclaim for their hard work.”

The championship events were designed to test speed, agility and the ability to react quickly and correctly in a number of emergency situations. All teams competed in: an assault course; a first aid incident; a pool emergency incident; a team rescue relay; an individual male/female rescue relay and a rope throw relay.
